1. iRobot S8
This smart robot vacuum and mop is a great option for homes with a variety of. It vacuums and mops well and has a great navigation system that includes both GPS and laser sensors, and offers a broad range of features and controls available via the app. It also comes with a useful feature that lets you add cleaning zones to certain areas that need extra attention and Keep Out zones that you don’t want it to be. It also receives software updates, like the other Roomba products, that enhance it over time.
It’s expensive but is also among the most advanced robot vacuums ZDNet has ever tested. It’s got a huge battery that can vacuum the entire house in less than two hours. It also switches between vacuuming and mopping at the push of a button. It will automatically empty the trash bin that is above its charging station, in contrast to other self emptying robots which require you to empty the bin after every run.

The previous Eufy devices have created an approximate map of your home by using infrared sensors and bumping into objects, but the X8’s laser mapping system is far more precise. It also takes a lot less time to construct a comprehensive picture of your home and can store multiple maps, which is ideal for multi-floor homes.
The X8 is still a good vacuum on floors with no dust, slinging debris under its side brushes and into its 400ml dust bin with relative ease. The tyres are adept at securing corners and edges even though they are circular. It’s not the best cat litter scooper, however our tests have shown it can only remove about 90% of the fur from hard floors.
There’s a basic mopping mode which uses the same water tank as the vacuuming one. While this is great for loose spills however, you aren’t able to control how much water it consumes, which will limit its effectiveness on more serious staining. However, it does an admirable job of removing pet hair, with a higher pickup rate than the Roborock S7.
3. Miele RX2
Awarded for its quiet and efficient home appliances Miele’s RX2 robot vacuum is a great choice because of its cleaning power, beautiful design and excellent navigation. However, it does have a few operational oddities that prevent it from being ranked as the top overall smart robot vacuum.
Similar to the latest models of iRobot and models, the RX2 features a dual-sensor mapping system that uses an LIDAR sensor to map the space and two 3D scanning cameras to detect and avoid obstacles (like furniture legs or pet waste) in real-time. Once the room is mapped the app allows you to assign virtual no-go areas and favorite sections that the robot will automatically clean. You can also change the cleaning modes, start cleaning manually, Smart vacuum cleaner or view a live feed of the cameras onboard from the main screen.
The sensors of the RX2 work well in registering furniture and other obstructions in real-time. The suction and sweeping capabilities are exceptional, removing surface litter from carpets with medium pile as well as dust that has been deposited on floors. It’s not the fastest robot available. Like many others it’s not a great climber and has issues with things like thresholds made of steel transition strips.

It has more advanced automation than the majority of its competitors, including the ability to set up virtual boundary markers through its mobile app. While its application is a bit slow and the 980 can spin a bit when rolling over cables, it’s still an extremely efficient robot vacuum cleaner vacuum.
We love the 980 because it uses its iAdapt2.0 navigation sensors as well as visual simultaneity localisation and mapping (or vSLAM) to store the floor plan of your home.
